Well Winter is here. The gardens are taking some heavy winds and the landscape looks a bit battered around here at the moment. Not so great for photos. Some Winter design tips include:

Make sure all new Roses are firmly staked
Ensure mulch is placed on any exposed soils
Reduce watering indoor plants
Increase composting temperature with lawn clippings
Remove old veges from gardens to avoid disease

With the heat of summer one of the best New Zealand drought resistant NZ native plants is the Astelia nervosa 'Westland', favoured by landscapers and gardeners alike.

Found to grow in most well drained soils and dry sites, we have found that they will grow in very poor soils or tight containers and show no real signs of stress. They do require a good water every couple of weeks and the occasional fertiliser, but seem to do well in harsh situation.

Clump forming they will spread to approx 400mm high and 400mm wide or more, if left to go for it in the open ground they can cover a good amount of ground area quite quickly.

In New Zealand our summer gardens are often in high humidity attracting many Pest and Disease problems. Organic solutions often work well, with a little understanding of how the garden can fend for itself using plants from the garden itself for sprays the question is asked 'Why use commercial sprays'?

Below is one of our favourite Organic sprays:

For Pests like Aphid, Caterpillar, Thrip, (sucking or chewing insects) prepare a spray of:

Ingredients-

1 Whole Garlic. (approx 10 cloves).

2 Good hand fulls of fresh Mint leaves.

1 Whole Onion, skins and all.

1/8 cup Vegetable oil.

Preparation method:

-Crush garlic cloves, roughly chop mint leaves, dice up Onion and throw all of this into a 10L bucket.

-Half fill with bucket with hot water, add the vegetable oil and stir in well. Leave to soak for 4-5 hours.

-Once cooled, pour the mixture into another bucket through a fine sieve or muslin to remove the leaf etc. There should be around 1/3 bucket of liquid.

-Fill bucket to half way with water.

-Now you can add the liquid / spray into your sprayer and your own Organic Bug spray is now ready to use! (If you find the spray is not strong enough, less dilution or extra garlic may be needed).

- Producing tapered fruit that mature from green to yellow to red and have a mild sweet flavour. Chosen for the home gardener for it's consistent performance in the garden.
- Great for salsa, salads, stir-frying and roasting.

Chilli- Serrano.
Colourful fruits that mature to purple - black.
- Bullet shaped 5-6cm fruits, Said to be 5 times hotter than Jalapeno Chilli.
- Good for salsa as they dont have tin walls that would normally require staming or peeiling.

Chilli- Habanero Red.
Another consistent home garden vege variety. Grows well in container or pot.
- Producing HOT small twisted green to red fruits.
- Plant when night time temps are above 13.c, may need a stake for support.

Parnell Rose Gardens. The Dove-Myer Robinson rose gardens situated at 85 to 87 Gladstone Road, Parnell, Auckland, New Zealand NZ. The gardens are stunning at this time of year October - December. Some 5000+ rose bushes showcasing new and old rose varieties, many of which have been bred by internationally celebrated rose breeders.

Stage 1: Landscape consultation / client brief.

The client in this case was in a panic! As well as being in dire need of some assistance helping her decide what to do with the somewhat destructed rear area to her yard, she also had no idea where to start designing, or where to go to get plants and stone.

Her former back yard was reduced to a pile of earth and a huge hole where large sections of concrete were removed from where previous home owners had laid large blocks for vehicular parking.

Recovered from the excavation were some six hundred or so (previously used) paving stones that she hoped would be able to be incorporated into the final landscape design.

There are also two healthy Cordyline australis in the area to be retained, so the idea was also to be to include these current plantings amongst the plantings suggested by the designer.

Predominantly New Zealand native plant species were to be used in combination with New Zealand stone.

The design brief:

- Create relaxed living areas that are comfortable, and that entice you into experiencing the spaces

- Flow between both indoor and outdoor living areas

- Natural flow between separate areas within the garden itself

- Use of screening to provide privacy for the occupants, shelter for young plants and division between garden spaces

- Reflect and accent character within the current architecture of the home through to the garden using colour and angles

- Create a low maintenance landscape that has all year round charm

- Select plant types that change through the seasons with vibrant plant foliage and staggered flowering times

- Provide Entertaining areas for seating and the use of BBQ

- Problem solve where to place clothes line and various amenities such as garbage, recycling, dog kennel

- Give Plant maintenance schedules for selected plantings

Stage 2: Concept plans and sketches.

Several concept sketches were produced offering various ideas for plant placement and hard surface layout. Plant varieties are suggested and quick sketches developed to give the client an idea of what the final landscape will look like

Stage 3: Master plans and Plant plans.

Master plans were developed from the initial landscape consultation, concept drawings and sketches.

The client brief listed very common landscaping requirements:

- Balance between space and flow between areas

- Plant types and landscape products that keep with the current styles of the residential structure

- Low maintenance landscaping

Using bold, bright, lush foliage of native New Zealand plant species against the subtle tones of New Zealand river stone, the essence of New Zealand is produced within the living environment.

Noticeable elements within the Master plan reflect the naturally occurring plant contrasts seen in New Zealand native forests. Emphasis within the landscape design is focused on natural balance, using curved and straight lines within the landscape that reflect the structural styles of the residence.

Soil types vary around the world and with a quick soil analysis we can gather the information required to design planting plans for your gardens accordingly.

A soil analysis would include:

Soil type

Soil analysis is critical in the performance of particular plant types, for example a Camellia or Rhododendron will not tolerate an alkaline soil, much preferring an acid soil.

Before you stamp on that bug, remember they are part of the global life cycle and give balance to our environment. The praying mantis, Miomantis caffran, is shown in this photo eating the European wasp, one of New Zealand's most disliked garden pests.
We can clearly see the benefits of some of the unusual looking bugs / insects in our gardens, and yes she devoured the whole wasp!
Both species shown are introduced pests into NZ, and were able to survive very well in the New Zealand climate. Encouraging more Mantis into your garden will surely control the wasp numbers along with other plant growth inhibiting pests in your landscaped gardens.

Coastal plants for New Zealand Gardens.
Pseudopanax lessonii or 'Coastal five finger' has a waxy protective coating on the leaf that helps shield the plant from harsh salt air and coastal conditions. Pseudopanax lessonii is often used as a 'nursery' plant in the landscape garden, this means using the plant as a fast growing shelter species to provide protection for slower growing, less hardy plants.
Plant Pseudopanax lessonii in a growing position where it will get sun most of the day, provide enough space to grow to a mature height of several meters. Prune and remove lower branches on the maturing plant, this will encourage an eventual evergreen overhead canopy that will provide solid summer shade.
Pseudopanax lessonii can be managed at a hedging height, some plants will hollow out in the center after 5 years or so and will require replacing. Plants can also be susceptible to sooty blotch and may be treated with copper oxychloride. Planting to allow constant air flow around the entire shrub will help reduce attack from disease. Place a 12 month slow release fertiliser capsule or 2 at the base of the planting hole. Young plants will feed heavily for the first 2 years.

Indoor Plants and sub-tropical plants can be fussy and may require individual soil and climatic conditions to prevail over the colder winter season. Indoor plants will generally require less watering over the colder winter period and prefer warm air temperatures to keep soil warm and plants growing with excellent health.

Test your plants soil with the back of your hand, if it feels damp on the surface then watering is not usually necessary. Usually watering indoor plants once every 2 weeks is fine, some fleshy leaf plant varieties will always use more water so this is a general rule. Plants will generally use less nutrient over the winter period.

Move cold sensitive plants, if possible, into rooms within your home that are well lit and warm. Take care with placement of indoor heaters and fire places. Try not to burn your plants or lead the plants soil to become dried out in a dry climatic situation.

Most gardens in New Zealand have perennials hiding somewhere within the shadows or recesses of the landscape. Protecting and caring for perennials over the cold winter periods can be very successful with some simple easy to follow gardening advice below:

- Bring indoors any tender culinary herbs you have within your garden that you may want to keep from frost burn, place the containers somewhere with good light, provide free drainage and water in-frequently over the winter season.

- Cover any plants within your garden that are tender to frost with frost cloth, Citrus when young in particular. Some lower growing perennials such as begonia will survive a hard frost using straw as a frost cover. Cover with a layer 100 mm thick, if possible remove the straw during the sunlight hours.

- A gentle hose or sprinkler cover of all plants in a heavy frost can break any ice, WATER BEFORE SUNRISE!!! This may help avoid plants from 'melting'.

- Shade cloth or weed mat can substitute as a shelter belt for young plants. Be aware young deciduous trees, when leafless, may still require protection from harsh cold. Stake the young tree in severe wind conditions.

- Some bulbs prefer to be left in the ground over winter where others prefer to be lifted. Be sure you know what bulbs you are planting in your region for their growing requirements.

Palmerston North AgResearch team have been working on a project involving a plant spray that triggers plants into flowering like a switch. The plant spray starts or kick starts the plants normal flowering process but does not speed up the usual flowering periods of plants.
The spray being developed will also be used to slow down or stop plants flowering at all. The benefits could be beneficial to both the cut flower market, fruit / vege industry, landscape design, landscapers and gardeners planting options.

Just how green are the New Zealand landscapes? This is a question often asked by people yet to visit Aotearoa, 'Land of the long white cloud'. It is sometimes a little overwhelming for visitors arriving in the country via Auckland, with the vast amounts of green shades within our landscape, the colour play on the waters with reflections of blue-white silk skies.
Often quoted as being the 'Silver City', Auckland city also has some very green sights to be seen.
The photo taken yesterday, Autumn Vista Views, are framed with native nz and exotic introduced species. The image is a part of a growing set that have been captured through the changing seasons from a private residence in the suburbs of West Auckland, North Island, New Zealand.
The residence is situated on a busy through road in a built up suburban area of Auckland. From the photos you can see there are no other houses to be seen, even amongst the busy hussle of the steadily growing city. Proving the point, Yes, even in central cities, New Zealand really is green.

The ever changing New Zealand landscape comes to life during the autumn months to reveal a landscape rich with vibrant colour. New Zealand is the perfect growing climate for highly attractive exotic plant species and introduced plant species have become a dominant feature amongst the New Zealand landscape.

Deciduous fruit, some perennials, ornamental, shelter and erosion controlling trees were introduced into the country with the early European settlers. Tree varieties introduced into home gardens were more towards the fruiting variety with the main emphasis on edible varieties.

Shrubs and shelter trees were introduced to protect animal stocks from the sometimes harsh New Zealand environment and vast amounts of European trees were introduced for public parks, street plantings and large specimen gardens.

'World renowned landscape architect to tour NZ next month

One of the world’s leading landscape architecture experts Joan Nassauer is speaking in New Zealand next month.

She arrives in Auckland on February 28 for a three week study, research and speaking tour jointly hosted by the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects and the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture.

Nassauer, from Michigan USA, is the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects’ (NZILA) second Education Foundation scholar. She will speak in New Zealand cities and towns throughout March.

Nassauer is a world renowned landscape architect with particular expertise in and passion for ecology and landscapes.

She is Professor of Landscape Architecture in the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan.
